Siam Country Club Pattaya Old Course, is designed by I. Izumi, has just been completely renovated with Mr. Lee Schmidt of Schmidt-Curley Design Inc. as a course architect. The project includes newly refurbished facilities. The long history of the club will ensure the continuing maturity of the golf course. Some of the trees were removed allowing for an excellent breeze. A popular grass, Seashore Paspalum, was chosen for the fairways, and Novotek for the greens. In addition, the 101 bunkers are there for beauty and challengers for all golfers alike.
Typical of the course is the iconic 15th, a par 4 with a creek crossing the fairway and a huge tree that can easily obstruct a wayward tee shot. You can play short of the water but you are then faced with a long approach to a well-protected green which like most of the greens on this course run very fast. The three finishing holes offer no respite so you had better pay respect to the large Buddha which guards the 9th green and hope that it brings you luck.
One of the best known golf courses in Thailand the Old Course at Siam Country Club is one of the most mature courses in the area and its large trees and beautifully landscaped native plants set it apart from other premium courses in the area.
The course ha a traditional layout with many holes bordering the picturesque lakes and cleverly placed ponds. Long and accurate tee shots are essential if you are to successfully negotiate the narrow fairways. You also need to keep away from the large trees which will either totally block your way or require a low punch shot to get back into play. The greens are superb and fast and you will need all the help you can get from your caddie in order to avoid the dreaded three putt.
The last four holes on this course rank with the best in Thailand and have set up many dramatic finishes so beware they don’t wreck your card as well.
