Overview

The Sir James Resort & Country Club in Khao Yai which was formerly known as Forest Hills is actually closer to Bangkok than many other Khao Yai golf clubs so can be played on the way to the National park or on your way back. This is a well-designed and challenging parkland course set in the foothills of the park featuring many streams, lakes and waterfalls which together with the local flowering plants make this a very attractive golf course.

Nearly every hole on the course is framed by the forest-covered hills typical of the region and when the backdrop of hills are missing the designers have filled in the gap with colourful flower beds, native shrubs and natural-looking water hazards. You need to keep on the fairway because once you stray offline then you will end up in the thickish rough, the plants or even worse and have no choice but to play out sideways.

The elevations changes produce some very attractive and inviting holes. The 3rd is a good example as you drive downhill to a sloping fairways which will have a tendency push your ball downhill towards the water hazard. If you can make it over the rise and get some roll then you can have a go at the green from long distance and have an eagle chance. The par 3, 254th which is also the signature hole plays from elevated tees towards a green circled by water. The difficult par-4 finishing hole also starts from elevated tee boxes with an approach over water to an elevated green in front of the clubhouse.

In general this is not an overly difficult course but the designers have thrown in enough bunkers, water hazards and dog-legs which, together with the elevation changes and uneven lies, will be enough to test most golfers. None of the greens are that easy to read so the best position on the fairway for a solid and well-placed approach is essential if you are to score wel
